After spending more than five years in Earth’s orbit, the Japanese spacecraft was declared non-functional in orbit on May 12, 2011. Known as the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS), or Daichi for short, was an Earth-monitoring spacecraft designed to map land surfaces in Asia and over the Pacific Ocean. From its orbit some 435 miles (700 kilometers) above the surface of the planet Daichi snapped a total of 6.5 million images. One of the unique data that ALOS has provided to the Geospatial community is the ALOS PRISM data. PRISM was a Tristereo capable sensor to be used for generating Digital Terrain Models of earth.
